Ch. 3 -- Courtship and Marriage to Beryl

1948 - 1953

One day while looking for letter-writing stationery in one of the then-numerous Chinese haberdashery stores in Kingston's China Town, Luke could not help noticing the tall, lithesome, dark-haired beauty with curly tresses, serving behind the counter. He must have noticed she was looking at him rather intently. Taking his change and checking it carefully, he must have wondered what else did he need to buy in that store and if he returned soon would she still be there? Following their wedding, Luke and Beryl toiled mightily and eventually opened their own little store in Kingston. In fact they owned a series of small shopfront businesses, each a little better than the last and they moved several times around town, looking for growth. Beryl was in her element, in fact for the rest of her working life she would always be in business, savvy, knew how to turn a profit and support her family. But Luke had somewhat different ideas about raising and educating his children. Characteristically for him, he began carefully to plot his successful return to working in St. Ann, where his mother lived and where and his roots were planted deep.
