War breaks out in Europe and Britain requests help from its colonies, Luke is one of the early volunteers and ships to England where he joins battle 'on the home front' as a mechanic servicing army jeeps, trucks, planes, bikes and so on. Mandated by colonial regulations, compulsory savings are drawn from his salary and additionally, Dad sends money back home regularly to help support his mom and younger siblings. After the war and de-mobilization Luke returns to Jamaica and stays in Kingston to finish his studies in accounting. The capital city was busy, bustling, fast-growing holding much promise for a young man but in his heart he missed the country. Luke wrote to his mother regularly and whenever he could he also sent money home.
