On several occasions in this period I heard with my own ears Luke say 'I love you', words I used to think could never pass his lips. I believe he may have re-considered his relationships and found after all, there was a need, a time and a place for open expressions of his affection. He began a written correspondence with Caroline, taking days or sometimes maybe weeks just to finish a letter, thereby developing a bond that culminated in his very warm welcome to her when she visited Luke in 2010. It is a testament to the greatness of his character that he could thoroughly trust and be affectionate with a daughter-in-law he had never before set eyes upon and the importance he placed on family. While Luke loved all his children equally, I think it can be fairly said, in his latest years there was a very special place in his heart for Liz and for Raymond. Dad had the ability to make everyone of us feel we were special and perhaps his favourite. But besides that fact, I do believe he made an extra effort to cultivate his relationships with Liz and Raymond and I think they may well feel extra-ordinarily blessed.
